ERHUVWUErhuvwu left Delta State in Nigeria fleeing abuse and oppression. A beautiful young woman, she has struggled to walk since the age of six after suffering from polio and her disability made her vulnerable. To escape, she had to secretly borrow money from her aunt to sneak away, because had her partner discovered that she was leaving, he said that he would kill her.
Erhuvwu has no family here and is alone but says that she has never felt safer and more supported. After staying at the YWCA’s 1st Woodlawn Shelter, they located a one bedroom apartment for her and she came to Furniture Bank to select a kitchen table and chairs, a bed and bedding and a significant item to her, an ironing board and iron. Currently, she is upgrading her education at an adult learning centre because she is determined to find a customer service job and looking professional is very important to her.
Erhuvwu says that by providing her with these essential items, Furniture Bank has enabled her to complete her education and move forward positively in her life toward a brighter and safer future.
