Success at starting over
Veronica and her husband arrived in Canada with nothing, driven from their native Columbia by threats of violence from corrupt armed group forces. A grim predicament to be sure, the pair sought refuge at the Family Residence Shelter and eventually came to Furniture Bank when they were able to secure an unfurnished apartment to call their own.
Not only did Furniture Bank assist in providing Veronica and her husband with a selection of tasteful home furnishings, it also assisted in providing some valuable volunteer experience for both parties that they were able to parlay into bigger work opportunities. Most notably, Veronica was eventually offered a paid position by Furniture Bank itself, working in client service and earning a sense of self and security that she has never known before. This was the achievement of a long-term career goal of working for a non-profit organization.
