Client services volunteer Diane Anger shares how she came to Furniture Bank – and why she continues to share her time and talent.

“Many years ago, I attended the grand opening of the Furniture Bank ‘s new showroom in Etobicoke. I was impressed and decided that I wanted to be a volunteer. I have been a client service volunteer for five years.

It has been an enriching experience for me. I enjoy helping people in need and making a difference in their lives. I am also interested in meeting people from other countries and have served clients from 49 countries.

I have had so many amazing clients over the years. One of them was a couple of years ago. A mother and her adult son were with me to select their furniture. I could sense that this mother was a very special person. I told her that her son reminded me of my son. We seemed to bond.

After choosing their furniture, we went to housewares. She chose a complete set of dishes. I told her that I had donated them that morning and had enjoyed using them for many years.

She said, “This is true sisterhood”. We hugged.

She and her son got the dignity they deserved and were able to set up an apartment. I continue to have happy memories of that experience and was so grateful I could be of help.”

We are so grateful to Diane – and all of our core volunteers – for her steadfast commitment to our mission. We could not serve upwards of 100 families per week without their support.

If you have a few spare hours a week and you share our vision of a world in which everyone has access to a furnished home, drop us a line. We’d love to speak with you about volunteer opportunities at Furniture Bank.
