Furniture Bank Ready to Assist Afghanistan Refugees

assist afghanistan refugees

Afghanistan refugees are starting to arrive in Canada, and we are ready to help them rebuild their lives. We are Furniture Bank, located in Toronto and a member of the Furniture Bank Network across Canada. Working alongside agencies and groups that provide housing, we assemble a whole homing solution for people who arrived here to start their lives with nothing but the clothes they wear.

The origin story of our organization began with Sister Anne’s encounter with Somali refugee families. Since 2017 we have helped home nearly 8,000 newcomers to Canada, of which about 3,000 were refugees.

We understand securing a location to live is the first step. Furniture Bank works to transform housing into a home, making it a place for families to call their own and to feel safe in.

Too often, families in need arrive at their house without any furniture – no kitchen to eat at, no bed to sleep on. Our hearts break at the image of children, so recently traumatized, sleeping on floors.

These families need all the items, big and small, that make up a home:

  • Beds
  • Bedding
  • Dressers
  • Bedside tables
  • Lamps
  • Desks
  • Tables and chairs
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Bathroom supplies
  • Pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, knives, etc.
  • Televisions
