Furniture Bank works with all organizations that share our believe and acknowledgement the right of every individual to her or her basic needs for sustainable living by providing furniture & related goods to those unable to afford them.

We work with Shelters, Governments, Churches, Community Agencies, Social Service Groups and others who are securing housing for their families.

Our mission is to support your agency in reaching our vision of a world in which EVERYONE has the stability and dignity of a furnished home.

Basic needs include any resource deemed necessary for persons or households to achieve and maintain physical well-being (Sarlo 2006, Collin & Campbell, 2008, Homeless Hub).

These comprehensive lists have been developed to represent a holistic picture of what is required to move beyond mere survival to well-being. Such lists consist of: food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, personal care items, essential furnishings, transportation, communication, laundry services, education, sanitation and insurance.

In 2018, Statistics Canada estimated the amount of income needed in Canada to afford these basic necessities. Their research suggested that a four-occupant household would need on average $48, 142 (Statistics Canada, 2019). These amounts were calculated using the Market Basket Measure (MBM) of Low Income, Canada’s official poverty measure since August 2018. The MBM defines the cost of a necessary “basket of goods” required by a household to maintain an adequate standard of living. This income required to maintain the standard of living varies upon region and defines the poverty line.

The Shelter Component of the calculation is explicit “In addition to the allowance for the rental of the dwelling, an amount had been added to reflect the fact that some households would have to provide their own appliances, such as a refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer.”  This can amount to $5000 of one time cost not captured by MBM.

It's all about keeping the lights on

We too are a charity. While our Social Enterprises help cover over 50% of the cost of operations there remains a shortfall that must be covered. Our model is not about ‘selling furniture’ back to the public, its is about furnishing your families with the best we can get from the community. Our goal remains to grow our social enterprises to continue to lower the direct cost that we need an agency (or the family it is supporting) but at this time the 11 trucks, 44 staff, 26,000 sq ft warehouse, repair workshop, social employment program and associated gas, insurance, maintenance, technology and equipment require these costs to be shared.
