Buying new furniture? Here are the things to consider

The time has come!

So you really need that new dining table. And chairs. Six chairs this time, because your family is growing.

Or maybe it’s the opposite – you’re looking to downsize and need a small sofa for your new home.

Or maybe, just like myself, you’re looking for a decent desk that will serve you well since you’re working from home now.

DID YOU KNOW?

So while you do the research on what furniture to buy, please consider more sustainable steps you can take on this journey. Below, we share 6 things to consider when buying new furniture. Enjoy!

Buying second-hand furniture

While it may not work for everyone and for every piece of furniture, this is definitely one option you could consider for tables, desks, chairs, and dressers. The best thing about buying second-hand furniture is that you already know it’s been used – if it’s still in good condition after all these years, that means it will serve you well! Of course, this applies only to good quality furniture – see next point!

Good quality

But how do you know if the furniture is of good quality? We asked Jim Connelly – Master Artisan, Artist and Home Stager

Vintage furniture is usually constructed from solid wood as compared to typical modern furniture made from wood composite or particleboard that can break easily.

Look for solid wood furniture that will stand the test of time. Old dressers have more storage and sturdier functioning drawers. Dining tables and chairs made by master carpenters often feature beautiful tongue and groove joints, a true test of quality carpentry.

To update a vintage piece, think outside the box. You can apply a fun paint finish to transform Bland to Grand.

I painted an old dining room table and chairs using two colours: dark chocolate and ivory. I painted the table and four chairs dark chocolate and two chairs ivory. I cut a sheet of Masonite in three equal sections to fit the top of the table perfectly. I then painted zebra skin using dark chocolate and ivory that could be easily removed for storage and replaced for more drama. A great way to get luxurious dramatic energy at a fraction of the cost of buying a new designer piece. Re STYLE… Re INVENT … Re LOVE!

Timeless style/Your style

It’s much easier to paint your walls in order to refresh your space than it is to reupholster your sofa, isn’t it? And of course, you can help spruce up your space with brightly coloured furniture!
If you want to live more sustainably, the only effective way is to.. buy less. And by using what you have for as long as you can. Ask yourself: “will I be enjoying this piece of furniture after 3-5 years?”.

Donate what you have

Now it’s a great time to think about your unwanted furniture – what to do with it and where does it go? If your furniture is in good condition, you have a few options. You can try to find people in your area that may be interested in your items (ex. Facebook Marketplace). Another option is dropping off your unwanted furniture or house hold items at one of our two facilities.  Or you can hire us for your furniture removal needs, knowing that your items will change someone’s life.

Recycle whatever you can

If you are not able to donate furniture, please make sure if there are any parts that are recyclable. See examples below! We also have found a few organizations in GTA that can take care of what you have!
