Getting Started with AI in 2025

Lessons from Furniture Bank's Journey

Aesthetic Brown Fashion Collection Blog Banner (1)

Many non-profit organizations leaders often ask me if it’s too late to start learning about and implementing artificial intelligence (AI). The short answer is – it’s never too late.

At Furniture Bank, we began our AI journey in 2022, and we’re still learning, growing and innovating. Here’s our perspective on how non-profits can get started with AI in 2025, based on our three years of exploration and implementation.

Why AI Matters for Non-Profits like you

Before diving into the “how,” it’s crucial to understand the “WHY.” AI is a general-purpose technology (GPT) that impacts everything, much like the printing press, electricity, or the Internet did in their time. For non-profits, AI offers many key benefits including:

  1. Potential to amplify their impact (a lot!)
  2. Access to new capabilities previously unaffordable
  3. Acceleration of existing work projects
  4. Improvement in the quality of work, allowing more time for client interaction

Our WHY AI:

Addressing the Hidden Crisis of Furniture Poverty

At Furniture Bank, our mission is deeply rooted in addressing a hidden crisis that many don’t even know exists – addressing the hidden gap between Housing and Home.

When an apartment becomes available, there’s no magic that transforms it into a home. The stark truth is that creating a functional living space requires at least $4,000—a sum out of reach for many families emerging from crisis. Meanwhile, our society discards over 15 million tons of furniture annually. This disconnect leaves 1.6 million Canadian families in limbo—they have housing but lack the means to make it a true home.

Imagine families surviving on bare floors, using milk crates as tables, struggling to eat, study, sleep, and thrive in such conditions. This is the reality of furniture poverty—invisible yet profoundly impactful.

At Furniture Bank, we’ve always sought innovative solutions—from social enterprise, lots of technology, social finance, and impact measurement to bridge this gap. In 2022, we turned to AI as our latest tool. Why AI? Because it offers a responsible and beneficial way to dramatically amplify our impact, reaching more families and supporting them better.

By being curious about AI’s application into our organization, we’re not just adopting new technology; we’re reimagining how we can combat furniture poverty more effectively. It’s about using every available tool to ensure that when a family gets housing, they can truly create a furnished home—a place where they cannot just exist but thrive.

Key Milestones in our AI Journey:

  • 2022: First AI-generated image campaign “The Picture Isn’t Real, The Reality Is!”
  • 2023: Established our AI Manifesto and started experimenting with what AI knew about furniture poverty.
  • 2024: Implemented AI-augmented contact centre for social enterprise customers, clients, and donors.
  • 2025: Exploring AI Workflows, Agents, and Automations across different departments to create new capabilities historically seen as impossible for us.

Getting started on your own journey...

Learning AI starts today with being more curious than you were yesterday here are a number of free and low cost resources that I often recommend to people who are interested:

COURSES TO CONSIDER?

While many free AI courses exist, few address the unique needs of the non-profit sector. Our field faces distinct challenges and ethical considerations often overlooked in general AI education. Many courses double as sales pitches for specific platforms.

Two standout professionals who understand both AI learning and non-profit priorities are Tim Lockie and Meena Das. They offer budget-friendly, empowering courses tailored for our sector professionals.

BOOKS TO READ?

They are very much still helpful for learning and I find there are many books that zero in on particular topics that are relevant to both us as citizens and parents and those that are specific to our careers.

“Co-intelligence”

By Ethan Mollick, this book offers insights into how AI impacts various aspects of life and work

This is the book I recommend 100% of people asking me “Where do I even begin?”

CO-INTELLIGENCE: Living and Working with AI

“Nonprofit AI”

Simply learning AI tools is insufficient—This book was created by AI experts with non-profit sector expertise to equip mission-driven organizations with the knowledge to harness AI’s power for social good and navigate the practical realities of implementation.

“Nonprofit AI: A Comprehensive Guide to Implementing Artificial Intelligence for Social Good,”

PODCASTS TO LISTEN TOO?

While books are great, sometimes listening to a Podcast in the car or while doing other things can be a more convenient way to learn!

FundraisingAI Podcast

They’re very few podcasts that are focused specifically on AI and the nonprofit world.

Fundraising.AI is one of them!
I recommend you make this part of your regular routine to stay abreast of what’s possible and happening in our sector around responsible and beneficial AI.

Available on Apple, Spotify and their website

Experiment with ChatGPT!

Once you’ve gained some foundational knowledge, it’s time to dive into hands-on experimentation. ChatGPT is an excellent starting point, offering a versatile playground to explore AI capabilities.

  1. Get Started: Invest in a paid ChatGPT license. At less than the cost of a daily coffee, it’s an affordable entry into the world of AI.

  2. Explore Multiple Modalities: ChatGPT isn’t just about text. Experiment with voice inputs, image analysis, text generation, and the mobile app to understand AI’s diverse capabilities.

  3. Personal and Professional Applications: Use ChatGPT to tackle both personal tasks and professional challenges. This dual approach will help you understand AI’s potential impact on various aspects of your life and work. See AI for Anyone for specific practice scenarios.

  4. Stay Current: ChatGPT is continuously updated with new features. Regular use will keep you informed about the latest AI innovations that could affect you.

  5. Form Your Own Opinions: Through consistent experimentation, you’ll develop personal preferences and insights about AI. This firsthand experience is invaluable in shaping your AI strategy and AI outlook.

Remember, ChatGPT is just the beginning. Use it as a springboard to explore other AI tools and applications that align with your specific needs and interests.

NOTE: Both Meena and Tim have you practicing with ChatGPT in their courses so you can start this part with their help.

Final Thoughts

Overcoming misconceptions and challenges

Many non-profits hesitate to adopt AI due to misconceptions about cost, complexity, or relevance. However, AI tools have become more accessible and user-friendly. The key is to start small, focus on your organization’s specific needs, and scale up gradually.

The “dollar-a-day” difference: Innovation on a budget

Our journey has demonstrated that successful AI adoption isn’t about hefty budgets or extensive technical expertise from the start. Most individual tools we’ve been experimenting with for staff translate into a “dollar-a-day” cost. This cost-effective approach allows all of us to experiment and get started with various AI tools and identify those that offer the greatest potential for the charity and our staff goals.

Key takeaways:

  • People first: Remember that AI augments, not replaces, human capabilities.
  • Curiosity is key: Embrace a mindset of continuous exploration and experimentation.
  • Start small, think big: Begin with pilot projects and scale based on impact.
  • Prioritize trust: Ensure AI initiatives build trust with your stakeholders.

Everyone starts as an AI novice—the most important step is to begin your journey. By embracing AI with a spirit of curiosity and innovation, non-profits can enhance their capabilities, streamline operations, and ultimately make a greater impact in their communities.

Remember, it's never too late to start your AI journey

The privilege of curiosity awaits!
