Building a national support system

One of our first commitments to innovation has been leveraging technology to share resources beyond our own operations. We’ve invested over $1 million in developing a comprehensive support system with a sustainable financial model that allows other organizations to benefit from our infrastructure.

Resources our partners access:

  • Cloud-based technology solutions tailored for furniture reuse operations
  • Centralized call center handling donor inquiries and scheduling
  • Standardized training and operational best practices
  • Impact measurement tools that strengthen fundraising efforts

By the numbers:

  • 40% increase in donors for partner organizations
  • 30% increase in clients served annually
  • 7,423 individuals supported across Canada through our national network in 2023
  • 3,463 children (46% of those supported nationally) benefited from our program in 2023
  • Over 30,327 essential furnishing items distributed to families in need in 2023

Our shared revenue model allows organizations to access these resources without significant upfront costs, maintaining control of their mission while leveraging enterprise-level systems they couldn’t afford individually.

Expanding our national footprint

Expanding the National Mattress Return Program

Adding more community partners to IKEA’s mattress reuse initiative, building on our success with Montreal’s Welcome Collective, Ottawa’s Matthew House, and Winnipeg’s Oyate Tipi.

Engaging additional national retailers

Developing similar reuse and return programs with other national retailers to create circular economy solutions that support the communities in which they operate.

Adding new Consulting Services

Creating fee-driven consulting services to support organizations, municipalities to design high performing and sustainable furniture banking programs.

Knowledge Sharing Initiatives

Launching webinars and online forums to share expertise in running successful social enterprises, with upcoming discussions on investing in paid Google Ads impact.

Coming in May 2025

Impact Measurement Seminar

Furniture Bank’s impact methodology has been in development since 2015, and in May we will be sharing how our process, system and indicators work using results for 2024.

We will be hosting a webinar to provide a candid review of our impact reporting methodology and demonstrate its practical applications for program performance and fundraising. We will also speak to the Common Approach to Impact Measurement.

We will finish with discussing how others might build their own or access the same methods through being a customer of the Furniture Bank Support Service model.

Furniture Bank’s efforts on impact measurement were recognized this year as Clear Impact’s “Social Sector Hero of the Year Award

Navigating organizational transformation

Furniture Bank is undergoing a fundamental transformation, adapting our operations through increased flexibility and the integration of technology and data-driven decision-making. Expanding our National Mattress Return program with IKEA beyond the GTA has presented new challenges, revealing diverse community needs and internal capability gaps. To capitalize on these opportunities, we are refining our knowledge transfer tools to facilitate more effective insight sharing among our team experts. This shift enables us to focus on providing specialized consulting services tailored to specific community needs. We are committed to leveraging these changes to deliver sustainable solutions and enhance our support to communities.

Strategic Vision for 2025

Our strategic vision for 2025 is to deliver practical solutions to end furniture poverty across Canada through collective responsibility and collaboration. We will expand our reach and enhance innovation and efficiency by strengthening partnerships with businesses, government, and community stakeholders. This year, our strategic partnerships, particularly with IKEA, are critical to ensuring that every family has access to essential furnishings and a welcoming home. We remain focused on fostering sustainable practices, cultivating supportive communities, and building strong retailer relationships to advance a more equitable and sustainable world
