The City of Toronto Streets 2 Homes program is NOT affected by this change. If you access Furniture Bank services through this program – there is NO change in how you access our services.
In just the last two years, we have improved our support to our agency partners and have doubled the number of available appointments. As a result, over 10,000 individuals or 4,000 families have furnished their homes (MW: provide the stats for the past two years). This was achieved through several improvements, which included expanding our capacity and streamlining our processes. For example, we:
No. We will begin invoicing in May 2018 for appointments scheduled during the month of April 2018. Access for appointments will only be for agencies that have signed an Agency Partner Service Agreement.
In most cases, Yes. Further clarification regarding our cancellation policy will be in our Agency Partner Service Agreement. Coming soon.
No. Your agency access to refer clients would end.
Yes, we prefer these arrangements, they make administration for everyone much easier and more predictable. We will work with you to agree on a mutually-acceptable solution. Contact Sean Peddle or Natasha Hynes to discuss further.
Yes. Our current operation can support close to 5,000 families a year. We are determined and focused on replicating our activities to be able to support 25,000 families a year. While we continue to invest in our Charity and Social Enterprises to help offset the cost to scale, we do not see significant new government funding that would offset the fees we need to charge for appointments
We have looked at the fee structures of other furniture banks in Canada and the United States for best practices. On the high side, the total fee is $300-$400 per family, including the fee for delivery. On the low end, the total fee is $70-80. With the new appointment fee, Furniture Bank’s total fee, including delivery, will range from $175 to $275.
Our biggest cost and limiting factor is real estate / space. For nearly half of our history the City of Toronto supported us with donated space. Today we have to budget for Toronto market rent. Any support your leadership can provide on encouraging the City of Toronto to once again step up and provide Furniture Bank space in the east and north of the city we would welcome it. Please contact the Executive Director Dan Kershaw email@example.com discuss how we could collaborate in expanding the access to this support service in the city.
In the first years of Furniture Bank’s operations, when we had a nominal budget, one truck and a small city-funded warehouse with volunteer staff, we were able to support 200 families per year. By 2017, we had increased the number of families supported to over 10,000 men, women and children, who received over $4 million dollars worth of furniture. In addition, the waiting list for new social agency partners to access Furniture Bank ballooned from 90 agencies in 2016 to 200+ agencies in 2017. We estimate this represents an aggregate demand of over 20,000 families needing our immediate support. Consequently, the need to ensure that each appointment slot is filled and that the client shows up as scheduled, combined with the added costs of growing to support more clients, has led to the adoption of the new fee.
Appointments scheduled with Furniture Bank in Etobicoke will be subject to the new $75.00 fee. Scarborough Furniture Bank (SCHC) has its own service agreement in place with agencies that use its service.
