But for over 25,000 people in our community, there won’t be a table to gather around this year.
For families emerging from homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or rebuilding after crisis, moving into a new apartment is just the first step. These homes often arrive empty—without furniture, without kitchenware, and without even the basics needed to prepare a meal.
Many families are eating on the floor. Some make do with overturned crates as tables. Others have no way to cook at all. And on a holiday like Thanksgiving, that absence becomes even more heartbreaking.
Furniture Poverty Is Real—And Rising
Furniture poverty doesn’t always make headlines, but it affects tens of thousands of people each year. It means choosing between rent and a bed. Between groceries and a kitchen table. Between safety and dignity.
Without the basics—tables, chairs, pots, pans, plates—families can’t cook, connect, or simply feel at home. Children can’t do homework at a table. Parents can’t sit down to a meal with their kids. The emotional and psychological toll is real.
The Power of a Shared Meal
Research shows that regular family meals can do more than fill bellies. They support academic performance, reduce risky behaviors, and strengthen emotional wellbeing. In fact, children who eat with their families are more likely to experience long-term benefits to both mental and physical health.
But for those without the essentials, those benefits remain out of reach.
That’s why, at Furniture Bank, Thanksgiving isn’t just about furniture—it’s about giving families the ability to come together again. Kitchen tables and chairs create space for reconnection. Kitchen kits filled with pots, pans, cutlery, and dishes provide the tools needed to cook and share meals.
In 2025, thanks to donor support, Furniture Bank has already distributed 2,088 kitchen kits to individuals and families across the GTA.
Each delivery transforms an empty space into something more: a home.
