Furniture Bank is a registered charity and social enterprise based in Toronto, ON. We are on a mission to end furniture poverty—one sofa and one family at a time.
What is furniture poverty?
Furniture poverty means lacking the financial means to furnish a home. It means sleeping on the floor, eating without a table, or living without basic comforts that many take for granted. It has serious emotional, physical, and financial impacts. Our mission is to break this cycle by providing essential home items that support stability and well-being.
Since 1998, we’ve been serving individuals and families in the Greater Toronto Area who are transitioning out of homelessness, fleeing abuse, or rebuilding after a crisis. We collect gently used furniture, housewares, and kitchenware from the community and redistribute them to people in need—transforming empty spaces into furnished homes filled with comfort, dignity, and hope.
But we’re more than just furniture.
We support individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness or other forms of displacement who need financial assistance in creating a new home.
We divert furniture destined for landfill.
We hire equity-deserving individuals and provide skilled training opportunities for youth and other people facing barriers to employment.
We support a national network of re-use charities.
We advocate for change and growth in the charity sector
How we do it:
Our work is powered by our social enterprise—a furniture removal service that funds our charitable programs. By choosing to hire Furniture Bank to pick up your unwanted items, you’re not just clearing space in your home—you’re helping someone else create one.
We also run Leg Up, a social employment program that provides job training and meaningful work to individuals facing barriers to employment, strengthening both families and communities.

In partnership with over 150+ community agencies, we support women and children leaving shelters, refugees, the formerly homeless, and other equity-deserving groups. With every bed, table, or set of dishes donated, you’re helping turn an empty apartment into a true home
