SUMMARY OF RESEARCH

The bulky fraction of the waste stream is underexploited in terms of recycling and reuse. Although Furniture Reuse Organizations (FRO) redistribute approximately two million items per year, in theory there is potential to increase the volume of items diverted. The first means for achieving this would be to improve policies between local government bulky waste collection services and prioritize FRO, both in the sense of passing on suitable items and of explicitly directing residents to local reuse schemes.

Reusability depends on a number of factors: condition, collection methods, storage facilities and aesthetics.

The term ‘furniture reuse organisation’ are all third-sector organisations that play a role in collecting and redistributing furniture and/or white goods back into the community.
