Client Impact: Janet's Story

A Furniture Bank Impact Story

Janet*, originally from Rwanda, had witnessed the loss of her husband, siblings, and three children due to conflict in her native country. Despite these heart-wrenching circumstances, she found her way to Canada. Here, she was reunited with six of her other children.

But the day after her children arrived, Janet received another blow – a diagnosis of advanced cancer. As she started chemotherapy, severe back pain made lying down impossible for her. Her only available seating was a single kitchen chair, hardly adequate for her needs.

When Janet came to Furniture Bank she was able to pick out a beautiful leather sofa. During her visit to Furniture Bank Janet was also able to pick out a mattress and an ironing board. The items Janet picked out were delivered to her home the next day and provided her with the stability and comfort she needed to heal with dignity.
